C29 – Masonry Contractor

A masonry contractor installs concrete units and baked clay products; concrete, glass and clay block; natural and manufactured stone; terra cotta; and fire brick or other material for refractory work. This classification includes the fabrication and installation of masonry component units for structural load bearing and non-load bearing walls for structures and fences installed with or without mortar; ceramic veneer (not tile) and thin brick that resembles full brick for facing; paving; and clear waterproofing, cleaning and caulking incidental to masonry construction.

The Masonry (C-29) Examination is divided into five major sections. These sections are:

1. Job Planning and Estimating (42%)

  • Scope of work
  • Materials identification
  • Quantity and cost calculations for masonry, mortar, and grout
  • Quantity and cost calculations for reinforcements and embedments
  • Labor cost calculations
  • Equipment identification and cost

2. Site Preparation and Reinforcement (13%)

  • Demolition
  • Installation of footings and foundations
  • Drainage and waterproofing

3. Installation of Masonry Materials (26%)

  • Temporary bracing
  • Control and expansion joints
  • Installation of CMUs
  • Veneer installation
  • Pre-cast concrete installation
  • Fabrication and installation of stone slabs
  • Flatwork installation
  • Glass block installation

4. Fireplaces, Chimneys, and Barbecues (8%)

  • Fireplace construction requirements
  • Barbecue and fire pit construction requirements

5. Job Site Safety (11%)

  • Cal/OSHA safety requirements
  • Elevated work
  • Handling and fabrication of stone slabs
  • Disposal of contaminated materials
