C-2 – Insulation and Acoustical Contractor

An insulation and acoustical contractor installs any insulating media and preformed architectural acoustical materials for the purpose of temperature and/or sound control.

Content of the Examination

The Insulation and Acoustical (C-2) Examination is divided into six major sections. These sections are:

1. Job Preparation (15%)

  • Plans and specifications
  • Technical data
  • Site preparation
  • Material quantities

2. Acoustical Systems (31%)

  • Grid layout and framing
  • Exposed grids
  • Acoustical, panels, and tiles
  • Seismic requirements
  • Carrier channel requirements

  • Sound proofing

3. Hand-Installed Insulation (21%)

  • Fire and smoke control
  • Building insulation
  • Vapor and air barriers
  • Mechanical insulation fasteners
  • Reflective insulation
  • Mechanical & HVAC insulation

4. Blow-in Insulation (7%)

  • Baffle installation
  • Exterior/interior patching

5. Spray-in Insulation (5%)

  • Spray preparation

Sample Questions

The following questions are typical of the types of items that are on the examination. The correct answer is highlighted.

1. A contractor is to install an acoustical ceiling in a building having a heating-cooling system that makes use of pressurized plenums. The contractor places the ceiling after the venting system is installed, but before it is placed in operation. How has the contractor proceeded?
