C60 – Welding Contractor
A welding contractor causes metals to become permanently
attached, joined and fabricated by the use of gases and electrical energy, which
creates temperatures of sufficient heat to perform this work.
The Welding (C-60) Examination is divided into six major
sections. These sections are:
1. Job Evaluations and Estimating (10%)
- Plans, Specifications, and Drawings
- Equipment, Materials, and Supplies
- Job Task Scheduling
2. Shop Equipment and Materials (20%)
- Shop Equipment
- Shop Materials, Consumables, and
Reports
- Shop Housekeeping and Safety
3. Fabrication (19%)
- Shop Layouts
- Shop Cutting
- Grinding, Forming, and Tack Welding
4. Welding Processes (12%)
- Brazing
- Gas Welding
- Arc Welding
5. Field Work (29%)
- Field Layouts and Installations
- Field Welding and Weld Symbols
- Field Equipment and Transporting
- Field Housekeeping and Safety
6. Repair Processes (10%)
- Repair Evaluations
- Repair Processes
*Percentages are approximate*
The following questions are typical of the types of items that
are on the examination. The correct answer is highlighted.
1. Which of the following statements about brazing are
FALSE?
a. When brazing a
lap joint, the two surfaces should not be tightly clamped together to assure
proper alignment.
b. The brazing process
occurs below 2000 degrees Fahrenheit.
c. A brazed joint is
stronger than a soldered joint.
d. Brazing filler metal
is usually nonferrous.
2. When using DCRP arc welding, about 2/3 of the heat is
released at the electrode. Approximately how much heat is released at the
electrode for DCSP?
a. 3/4
b. 2/3
c. 1/3
d. 1/4
3. How should a worker be welding a lap joint in a flat
position on plate steel?
a. Use a weaving
motion so more heat is distributed to the bottom piece of metal.
b. Use a weaving motion
so more heat is distributed to the top piece of metal.
c. Both pieces being
welded should receive an equal amount of heat.
d. The piece having its
edge welded should receive the most heat.
